What it is
The 19th district climbs from the Gürtel to the edge of the Vienna Woods, and it gathers up a string of former wine villages — Heiligenstadt, Nussdorf, Grinzing, Sievering, Neustift am Walde — that the city absorbed in 1892. It is one of Vienna's wealthiest districts, a place of villas, embassies' residences and leafy streets, and at the same time its vineyard country: Vienna is one of very few capitals that grow serious wine inside the city limits, and much of it grows here. Beethoven spent summers in these villages; in Heiligenstadt in 1802 he wrote the despairing letter known as the Heiligenstadt Testament.

The Heurigen, above all. Mayer am Pfarrplatz in a house where Beethoven lodged; Wieninger am Nussberg and Sirbu among the vines of the Nussberg; Reinprecht in Grinzing; Fuhrgassl-Huber and Wolff in Neustift am Walde; Weingut Cobenzl, the city's own estate, high on the hill. The Beethoven Museum in Heiligenstadt. The Karl-Marx-Hof, a single council block about a kilometre long and the defining monument of Red Vienna. Up top, the Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg, with the whole city and the Danube laid out below, reached by the Höhenstraße. And Amador, one of the most decorated kitchens in Austria.
What it is like
By day: villa suburbs, dog walkers and vineyard paths that feel like the countryside twenty minutes from the Opera. From late afternoon the Heurigen fill, with long tables under trees, a glass of Gemischter Satz and a cold buffet. Grinzing's main street is the most commercial, with coach parties in season; the lanes of Nussdorf, Sievering and Neustift feel more local. After ten, silence.

Couples and wine lovers who want to wake up near the vineyards, walkers heading into the Vienna Woods, and repeat visitors who have done the centre. Families will like the space, though not the evening distances.
Practical
Tram D runs to Nussdorf, tram 38 from Schottentor to Grinzing, U4 ends at Heiligenstadt, and bus 38A climbs to the Kahlenberg. The catch: many Heurigen open only on certain days or weeks — a pine branch hung over the door means they are serving — so check before you go. Evenings back to the centre take time.
