Choosing a district

Innere Stadt — inside the Ring, everything on foot, and the grand hotels: Hotel Sacher behind the Opera, the Imperial on the Kärntner Ring, Palais Coburg on the old city bastion, and newer arrivals like Park Hyatt and Rosewood. Quiet at night, except around the bars between Ruprechtsplatz and Schwedenplatz. The most expensive answer, and for a first visit often the right one.

Neubau — the design-hotel quarter behind the MuseumsQuartier: Spittelberg's lanes, independent shops, and places like the 25hours Hotel right beside the museums. Ten minutes' walk to the Hofburg.

Wieden and Mariahilf — the practical sweet spot. The Opera, Karlsplatz and the Naschmarkt on foot, the U4 and U3 for everything else, and prices noticeably below the 1st.

Leopoldstadt — one bridge across the Danube Canal, with the Prater, the Augarten and the Karmelitermarkt. SO/ Vienna sits on the canal with the centre across the water. Streets near Praterstern are the scruffier end.

Landstraße — Belvedere and the Stadtpark, quieter streets, and Wien Mitte, the CAT airport terminal.

Hietzing — for Schönbrunn at opening time and villa-quiet nights, at the cost of a U4 ride into town.

What to check before booking

The S-Bahn trunk line is closed. From 7 September 2026 to the end of October 2027 the central S-Bahn section between Praterstern and the Hauptbahnhof is shut, and the S-Bahn platforms at Wien Mitte are closed; the CAT airport service runs as a coach from Wien Mitte meanwhile. U-Bahn lines are unaffected — so a hotel near a U-Bahn station is worth more than usual this year.

Whether there is a lift and air conditioning — both are standard in new buildings and far from guaranteed in a converted nineteenth-century *Altbau*. And the calendar: rooms get scarce and expensive around the Christmas markets, New Year, ball season in January and February, and big congress dates.
