Build a Vienna itinerary
Tell it how long you have and what you came for — palaces, music, coffee houses, Klimt, Heurigen. It builds a day-by-day plan that keeps each day in one part of the city — inside the Ring, out west at Schönbrunn, east by the Belvedere and the Prater, or up in the northern vineyards — which is the difference between a good day in Vienna and a day spent on the U-Bahn.
Each day stays in one part of the city on purpose. Schönbrunn, the Belvedere and the Prater sit in opposite directions, and crossing between them twice in a day is the easiest way to lose an afternoon on the U-Bahn.
Day 1

St. Stephen's Cathedral and its south tower
The rear of the nave is free; the towers, catacombs and the full interior are ticketed. Climb the south tower's 343 steps before the tour groups arrive, then look down on the patterned tile roof.

Graben, Kohlmarkt and a Demel break
Past the Plague Column and down the Kohlmarkt's flagship shopfronts to Demel, the former imperial confectioner. Watch the pastry kitchen through the glass, then choose between the Sachertorte and a slice of Annatorte.

A night at the State Opera
Book a seat on the Opera's own site, or try standing room — a few euros, released on the day, with subtitles at every place. The season runs from autumn to early summer; July and August are dark.

Day 2
Mostly Schönbrunn & the west · 6 h of activity

Schönbrunn Palace
U4 to Schönbrunn and the first time slot of the day. The Palace Ticket covers the whole main floor, including Maria Theresa's rooms; buy it only from the palace's official shop.

An hour at Café Sperl
Opened in 1880 and barely touched since: billiard tables, bentwood chairs, newspapers on sticks and waiters in black. Order a Melange and stay as long as you like — that is the point.

A concert in the Golden Hall
The Musikverein's Golden Hall is the room the New Year's Concert is broadcast from, and its acoustics are the benchmark. Buy from the Musikverein or the Konzerthaus directly — never from the costumed sellers on the street.

Day 3
Mostly the Belvedere, Prater & Danube · 4.5 h of activity

Klimt's The Kiss at the Upper Belvedere
Go at opening time, straight to the Klimt room before it fills, then walk down through the Baroque gardens, which are free, towards the Lower Belvedere and the city.

Hundertwasser House and KunstHausWien
The wavy, tree-topped council block can only be seen from the street — it is people's homes. Five minutes' walk away, KunstHausWien is the museum where you can actually go inside Hundertwasser's world.

Late Buchteln at Café Hawelka
The brown, crowded, artists' coffee house on Dorotheergasse, open late. The sweet yeast buns called Buchteln, baked to the family recipe, come out of the oven in the evening.
