The fixed points of the Vienna year
Whatever is or is not listed above, these come round every year and are worth planning a trip around.
- January — the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert on the 1st (tickets by lottery), then the heart of the ball season: the Confectioners' Ball, the Philharmonic Ball in the Musikverein, and dozens more. The Wiener Eistraum ice rink takes over Rathausplatz from late January.
- February — the Vienna Opera Ball at the Staatsoper (Thursday 4 February 2027), the grandest night of the season. See our concerts guide for how Opera tickets work.
- Spring — Easter markets at the Freyung and Schönbrunn, the Vienna City Marathon in April (18 April 2027), and the Heurigen opening their gardens. The Wiener Festwochen arts festival normally runs from mid-May into June.
- Summer — Vienna Pride and the Rainbow Parade on the Ring, the free Summer Night Concert in the Schönbrunn gardens, the Donauinselfest on the Danube Island (normally the last weekend of June), and the free Film Festival on Rathausplatz every evening in July and August. The opera houses take their summer break.
- Autumn — Sturm season at the Heurigen, the Wine Hiking Day through the city's vineyards (26–27 September 2026), Vienna Design Week, the Long Night of Museums (3 October 2026), the Viennale film festival (22 October – 3 November 2026) and National Day on 26 October.
- November–December — the ball season opens at 11:11 on 11 November with a waltz on the Graben, and the Christmas markets open from 6 November 2026: Schönbrunn, Rathausplatz, Spittelberg, Karlsplatz, Am Hof, the Freyung and more. On 31 December the free Silvesterpfad trail fills the old town.
Dates marked ≈ above are estimates from the usual pattern. Check the organiser before you book flights around one.
