From Vienna Airport into the city

First, the zone rule

The airport is outside the Vienna core zone. A Wiener Linien 24-hour or 7-day ticket, an annual pass or the transport part of the Vienna City Card does not take you there. On the local trains you need an extra ticket covering the stretch from the city boundary; the CAT and the airport buses have their own fares altogether. It catches out a great many visitors, and it is entirely avoidable.

Until the end of October 2027: what the closure changes

From 7 September 2026 until the end of October 2027 the central S-Bahn line between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof is closed, and the S-Bahn station at Wien Mitte is shut. The City Airport Train cannot reach its city terminal, so it runs as a coach, and the S7 no longer reaches the centre. Railjets from Hauptbahnhof are unaffected. The details below reflect the closure; check on the day, because interim arrangements change.

The five real options

1. Railjet or IC to Hauptbahnhof — fastest for most

Long-distance ÖBB trains link the airport and Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes, up to twice an hour, and the closure does not touch them. On a local ticket you pay the same as the S7 — €2.30 from the city boundary plus a €3.20 core-zone ticket, €5.50 in all — and at Hauptbahnhof you are on U1 and tram D. For a hotel near the Opera, the Belvedere or the south of the centre, this is now the best-value fast route.

2. CAT — currently "CAT by bus"

The City Airport Train normally runs non-stop to Wien Mitte in 16 minutes. During the closure it runs as CAT by bus: premium coaches with Wi-Fi to Wien Mitte (U3/U4) in about 21 minutes, every 12 minutes from 07:00 to 19:00 and every 15 minutes otherwise, roughly 05:30 to midnight. A single is €14.90, a return €24.90, and children under 15 ride free; online tickets are cheaper and valid for six months.

3. S7 or REX7 — cheapest, but diverted

The S7 costs the same €5.50 as above, but while the trunk line is closed it is turned back before the centre — sources disagree on exactly where, so read the departure board. The REX7 regional express is diverted via Hauptbahnhof, about 20 minutes. If you already hold a core-zone pass, you only need the €2.30 boundary ticket.

4. Vienna Airport Bus

ÖBB Postbus runs the Vienna Airport Bus (formerly Vienna Airport Lines): VAB1 to Westbahnhof and Hauptbahnhof, VAB2 to Schwedenplatz, VAB3 to Donaustadt, and from 5 September 2026 VAB4 to Karlsplatz and VAB5 to Praterstern. Fares are €11 one way, €20 return; children 6–14 €6, under-6s free, a family of two adults and two children €27. Buy online, at the machines or from the driver. With suitcases and a hotel near Schwedenplatz or Karlsplatz, it is the least effort per euro.

5. Taxi or booked transfer

Around 20–25 minutes to the centre outside rush hour. The radio-taxi companies quote fixed prices when you book ahead: Taxi 40100 lists €42 — ask for an airport cab, or a return surcharge applies — and Taxi 31300 €37 through its app. Uber and Bolt operate. For a late arrival, children, a group or an address inside the 1st district, a pre-booked car with a fixed price is the obvious answer.

Bratislava Airport as an alternative

Bratislava (BTS) is across the border in Slovakia and sometimes much cheaper to fly into. Slovak Lines runs a direct bus between the BTS terminal and Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 70 minutes, around twelve times a day, from €7.90. Worth it on a low fare with time to spare, not on a short weekend.

Getting back out

Allow more time than the map suggests: the A4 motorway to the airport can slow badly on weekday mornings and Friday afternoons. The Railjet from Hauptbahnhof is the most predictable choice with a flight to catch.
