What it is
The 2nd district is an island: Leopoldstadt lies between the Danube Canal and the Danube itself. In 1625 it became the enclosed Jewish quarter; in 1670 Leopold I expelled its residents and renamed the area after himself. Jewish life returned in the nineteenth century, strongly enough that Viennese called it the Mazzesinsel, until 1938 destroyed it. In 1766 Joseph II opened the imperial hunting grounds of the Prater to the public, and the district has been Vienna's playground ever since.

The Giant Ferris Wheel of 1897 and the fairground of the Wurstelprater, then the long, chestnut-lined Hauptallee running into meadows and woods. The baroque Augarten, home of the porcelain manufactory. The Karmelitermarkt, a real neighbourhood market ringed by good small kitchens such as Skopik & Lohn. The Schweizerhaus beer garden in the Prater, famous for its pork knuckle. On the canal, Jean Nouvel's SO/ Vienna, with Das LOFT at the top and one of the best views of the old city.
What it is like
Two districts in one. Near the canal — Taborstraße, Praterstraße, the streets around the market — it is lived-in and increasingly fashionable, with Orthodox Jewish families, students and young professionals sharing the pavements. Out in the Prater it is fairground noise by the wheel and near silence a kilometre down the Hauptallee, where Viennese run and cycle. In summer the canal banks fill with bars; in winter the Prater turns grey and many rides close.
Who should stay here
Families, runners and anyone who wants green space outside the door. Couples who like a neighbourhood with a market and neighbourhood restaurants rather than a museum district. Prices are noticeably lower than across the canal, which is only a bridge away.
Practical
U1 and U2 meet at Praterstern; U2 Taborstraße and U1 Nestroyplatz serve the canal side. The catch for now: the S-Bahn trunk line between Praterstern and the Hauptbahnhof is closed from September 2026 until the end of October 2027, so rail arrivals take longer — use the U-Bahn. Praterstern itself is a hectic interchange; choose an address near the Karmelitermarkt or Praterstraße rather than beside the station.
