Innere Stadt — Old Town
The imperial core inside the Ring: St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Hofburg, the Opera and the grand coffee houses, all within a twenty-minute walk.
What it is
The 1st district, Innere Stadt, is the old walled city — postcode 1010, and for six centuries the seat of the Habsburgs. In 1857 Franz Joseph ordered the fortifications torn down, and on their glacis rose the Ringstraße, a boulevard of opera house, parliament, city hall, university and museums built to show a modern empire. Everything inside that ring is the historic core, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.
What is here
St. Stephen's Cathedral at the centre, the Hofburg with the Sisi Museum, the Imperial Treasury and the Spanish Riding School, the State Hall of the National Library, the Albertina, the Imperial Crypt. On the Ring: the State Opera, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Musikverein. The grand coffee houses are nearly all here — Café Central, Hawelka, Demel, Café Sacher — as is the Loos American Bar, Adolf Loos's tiny 1908 cocktail room.
What it is like
By day Kärntner Straße and the Graben are a slow river of shoppers and tour groups, and the queue outside Café Central is part of the scenery. The side lanes — Schönlaterngasse, Blutgasse, the courtyards off Bäckerstraße — stay calm even at noon. After dark the district empties of day-trippers but not of life: concert crowds spill out of the Musikverein, and the bars around St. Rupert's, the so-called Bermuda Triangle, run late.
Who should stay here
First-timers on a short trip, and anyone going to the opera or a concert who wants to walk home. This is also where Vienna's grand hotels stand — Hotel Sacher, the Imperial, Park Hyatt. Budget travellers get far more room for their money one district out.
Practical
Everything inside the Ring is walkable; U1/U3 Stephansplatz is the hub, and trams 1 and 2 circle the boulevard. The catch is price and sameness: rooms cost the most in the city, and the main streets are lined with the same international brands as any European capital. Book cafés and dinners early, and eat at least once outside the Ring.
