Albertina

4.7(35,877)out of 5 on GoogleOpen · until 18:00📍 Innere Stadt · 1st district

One of the world's great collections of drawings and prints, in a Habsburg palace on the last surviving stretch of Vienna's city bastion.

Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen, Maria Theresa's son-in-law, began the collection in 1776, and the palace carries his name. Its graphic holdings run to around a million prints and tens of thousands of drawings — Dürer's Young Hare among them, though works on paper this fragile are shown only occasionally. What most visitors come for is on permanent view: the Batliner Collection, a sweep from Monet and the Impressionists through Picasso, alongside Habsburg state rooms restored to their early nineteenth-century splendour and a changing programme of major exhibitions. Hans Hollein's thin cantilevered roof over the entrance, added in 2003, marks the ramp up from Albertinaplatz.

Checked on albertina.at in September 2026: €20.90, open daily 10:00–18:00 and until 21:00 on Wednesdays and Fridays. A combined ticket at €29.90, valid a year, adds Albertina Modern in the Künstlerhaus on Karlsplatz. Under-19s enter free.

The late openings are usually the calmest time. The terrace outside, level with the Opera and the Burggarten, is free and one of the best spots to get your bearings in the Old Town. See also the Innere Stadt and Vienna's palaces.
