Heurigen & wine taverns in Vienna
Vienna has around 600 hectares of vineyards inside its own city limits, and the Heuriger is how the city drinks them: a family tavern pouring its own wine under the vines, a pine bush over the gate to say it is open. Three different things
Everything below is filed under wine, but it is not all the same experience, and knowing which is which saves an evening.
The vineyard Heuriger. Out on the slopes of the 19th district and across the Danube in Floridsdorf, the winemaker's own tavern: long wooden tables, a garden, a cold buffet and the year's wine. Mayer am Pfarrplatz in Heiligenstadt is the famous one — Beethoven lived in the house in 1817 while working on the Ninth — and it is priced accordingly. Wieninger am Nussberg puts you on a terrace in the middle of the vines with the city below. Fuhrgassl-Huber in Neustift am Walde is the big, cheerful, garden-and-family version. The City of Vienna even runs its own winery, Weingut Cobenzl.
The city wine cellar. Under the Innere Stadt, a handful of cellars have poured wine for centuries: Esterházykeller off the Graben, the multi-level Baroque vaults of the Zwölf Apostelkeller near the cathedral, and the Melker Stiftskeller, the cellar of Melk Abbey's Vienna house. Atmospheric and central — but these are not Heurigen in the strict sense: a Heuriger is a winemaker's own tavern beside the vines, and a cellar under the Graben is something else, however good the wine.
The wine bar. Modern rooms with long by-the-glass lists, for when you want a Grüner Veltliner at nine in the evening without taking a bus to the vineyards.
The honest catches
Opening dates rotate. A true Heuriger may only be *ausg'steckt* — open, signalled by the bound pine bush over the gate — for a few weeks at a time, and many open only in the late afternoon. Check the monthly "Ausg'steckt is" calendar on wienerwein.at, or the tavern's own site, before you cross the city.
Grinzing is the postcard, not the best of it. Its main street is where the coach tours unload for accordion music and a set menu. Walk a few lanes up, or go to Nussdorf, Neustift am Walde or Stammersdorf, and the same wine comes with far fewer tour groups.
What to drink
Order the house Gemischter Satz, Vienna's own appellation since 2013: at least three white varieties grown together in the same vineyard and harvested and fermented together. Wine comes by the *Achterl* (eighth of a litre) or *Vierterl* (quarter); a *G'spritzter* is wine topped with soda water, and on a hot afternoon it is what the locals are drinking.

What is a Heuriger?
A Viennese wine tavern run by a winemaker who serves wine from their own vineyards. The word also means the young wine itself, which may be called 'heuriger' until St Martin's Day on 11 November. A bound pine bush over the gate and the sign 'Ausg'steckt' mean it is open.
How does the buffet work in a Heuriger?
You choose food at the buffet counter and pay for it there, then sit down; wine and soft drinks are ordered at your table. A traditional Buschenschank may serve only cold dishes, while taverns with a full licence also serve hot food.
How do I get to the Heurigen from the centre?
For Grinzing and the Kahlenberg, take the U4 to Heiligenstadt and the 38A bus uphill; tram D runs out to Nussdorf; the Stammersdorf taverns are at the end of tram 31 across the Danube. Allow roughly 30–45 minutes from the Ring, and check the tavern is open that day before you set off.
When is the Vienna Wine Hiking Day?
The Wiener Weinwandertag 2026 is on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September, 10:00–18:00, and it is free. Routes run from Neustift through Sievering and Cobenzl to Nussdorf, from Strebersdorf to Stammersdorf, and through Mauer and Ottakring, with wine stands along the way.
