The Zwölf-Apostelkeller, the Twelve Apostles' Cellar, sits under a house on Sonnenfelsgasse, one of the quiet medieval lanes of the university quarter. From street level, stairs lead down into old brick and stone vaults on more than one level, and the deeper you go the older and cooler it feels. The rooms are lit low, the tables are long and shared, and on busy evenings the noise of the crowd rolls around the vaults.
The formula is that of a city Heuriger: Austrian wine by the quarter or eighth litre, a buffet of hot and cold dishes — roast pork, dumplings, cold cuts and spreads — and simple plates to share. It is a city wine tavern rather than a Heuriger among the vineyards, but for an evening in the centre that barely matters.
Honest note: it is firmly on the visitor circuit and groups come in numbers, so the food is hearty rather than refined and the atmosphere is cheerful rather than intimate.
