The Naschmarkt's mile of stalls, the Otto Wagner houses, Theater an der Wien and Vienna's longest shopping street.
What it is
The 6th district lies on the slope between the Wien river and Mariahilfer Straße, the old road west towards Schönbrunn and the city's busiest shopping street. It grew from a string of craftsmen's suburbs outside the walls, was folded into Vienna in 1850, and kept its working texture: courtyards, stairways cut into the hillside, and small workshops that turned into cafés and studios. The river was vaulted over around 1900, and the market on top of it became the Naschmarkt.
What is here
The Naschmarkt, about a kilometre and a half of stalls and restaurants, with a flea market beside it on Saturdays; NENI am Naschmarkt is its best-known table. Opposite, on the Linke Wienzeile, Otto Wagner's Majolikahaus, covered in painted tiles. The Theater an der Wien, where Beethoven's Fidelio opened in 1805, and the Raimund Theater for musicals. Haus des Meeres, an aquarium inside a wartime flak tower. Café Sperl, with its billiard tables, and Drechsler by the market. The inner stretch of Mariahilfer Straße is a traffic-calmed zone where pedestrians own the road.
What it is like
Loud and cheerful on Mariahilfer Straße on a Saturday; bargain-hunting and brunch around the Naschmarkt; noticeably calmer in the back streets of Gumpendorf, where the old craft buildings now hold bars, second-hand shops and small theatres. Evenings are lively without being rowdy — Barfly's is a long-standing cocktail bar here, and Gumpendorfer Straße has a string of good bars.
Who should stay here
Shoppers, food lovers and first-timers who want the centre within walking distance at lower prices than the 1st. Young couples and friends travelling together. Hotel MOTTO is the stylish address on Mariahilfer Straße.
Practical
U3 runs under Mariahilfer Straße (Neubaugasse, Zieglergasse), U4 along the river (Kettenbrückengasse, Pilgramgasse), U2 at Museumsquartier. The catch: the Naschmarkt's restaurant row is priced for visitors and its stalls sell a lot of the same dried fruit and spices — shop at the far end, towards Kettenbrückengasse, and eat in the side streets.
