Vienna's best-known market: a long double row of stalls and small restaurants running down the middle of the Wienzeile, from Karlsplatz towards Kettenbrückengasse.

A market has traded here since the eighteenth century, and around 1900 the Wien river beneath was vaulted over, giving it the long, straight strip it occupies today. The fixed stalls sell vegetables, spices, olives, cheese, meat, fish and wine; over the decades many have turned into sit-down eateries, from Viennese to Turkish, Israeli, Japanese and Balkan. Look up on the Linke Wienzeile side at numbers 38 and 40, two apartment houses by Otto Wagner — one tiled with painted majolica roses — and at the gilded dome of the Secession at the Karlsplatz end.

Checked on wien.gv.at in September 2026: stalls open Monday to Friday 06:00–21:00 and Saturday 06:00–18:00, and are closed on Sundays; the restaurants keep longer hours, including Sunday. On Saturdays a flea market sets up beyond the stalls near Kettenbrückengasse.

The honest catch: the Karlsplatz end is aimed squarely at visitors — free tastings that lead to expensive boxes of dried fruit, and seafood and antipasti priced by weight, so ask the price before anything is weighed.
