The best-known Heuriger in Heiligenstadt, in an old village house on a small church square where Beethoven once lived.
Beethoven spent part of 1817 in this house while working on his Ninth Symphony — the plaque on the wall records it, and the Beethoven Museum, in the house where he wrote the Heiligenstadt Testament in 1802, is a short walk away in Probusgasse. The winery behind the tavern is one of the most respected in Vienna, with vineyards on the Nussberg and around the city's northern slopes, and it has been a leading voice for Wiener Gemischter Satz, the city's own field-blend white: several grape varieties grown together in one vineyard, harvested and fermented together.
The setting is the classic one: low, old-fashioned rooms inside, and a large garden under old trees behind, where most people want to sit on a warm evening. The buffet serves the traditional Heuriger spread — roast pork, cold cuts, spreads, salads, strudel — with wine by the Viertel or the Achtel. Unlike many small family Heurigen that open only on rotating dates, this one keeps regular opening hours through most of the year; check pfarrplatz.at before you go.
Honest note: its fame brings tour groups, especially early evening in summer, and it is more polished than a village Buschenschank. Book for a group or a garden table on weekends.
