Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien

4.8(35,872)out of 5 on GoogleOpen · until 21:00📍 Innere Stadt · 1st district

The Habsburgs' picture gallery and treasure rooms, housed in one of the great museum buildings of Europe on the Ringstrasse.

Franz Joseph had it built to designs by Gottfried Semper and Carl von Hasenauer, facing its twin, the Natural History Museum, across Maria-Theresien-Platz; it opened in 1891. The interior is as much the point as the art: marble staircases, a domed hall, and above the main stairs spandrel and intercolumnar paintings by the young Gustav Klimt, his brother Ernst and Franz Matsch.

The collection is imperial in scale. The Picture Gallery has the world's largest group of paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder — Hunters in the Snow and The Tower of Babel among them — plus Vermeer's The Art of Painting, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Velázquez's portraits of the Spanish infantas and Arcimboldo's seasons. The Kunstkammer holds Cellini's gold Saliera, and there are Egyptian, Greek and Roman collections and a coin cabinet.

Important change: from 8 September 2026 every visit requires a pre-booked time slot. Checked on khm.at in September 2026, tickets are €22 online or €24 at the desk; open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–18:00, Thursdays to 21:00, closed Mondays. Under-19s enter free.

Do not try to see everything: pick the Bruegel room and one wing, then take a coffee under the dome of the cupola hall café. Thursday evenings are usually calmer. Nearby: Vienna's palaces and the Innere Stadt.
