Musikverein Wien

4.7(16,907)out of 5 on Google📍 Innere Stadt · 1st district

The home of the Vienna Philharmonic and of its New Year's Concert, and a hall whose acoustics musicians rank among the finest anywhere.

The Society of Friends of Music, founded in 1812, commissioned the building from the Danish-born architect Theophil Hansen, who also designed the Parliament; it opened in January 1870. Its Great Hall — the Golden Hall — is a long, narrow shoebox of gilded caryatids, coffered ceiling and wooden floor, and that shape, as much as the gold, is what gives the sound its warmth and clarity. The smaller Brahms Hall is used for chamber music and recitals.

The New Year's Concert has been broadcast from here to much of the world for decades; on 1 January 2027 it will be conducted by Tugan Sokhiev, making his debut. Tickets for it are allocated by the orchestra through an online registration long in advance — do not believe anyone selling them casually.

The honest catch: the Philharmonic's own subscription concerts are hard to get, and on many evenings the hall is rented to tourist-format orchestras playing Strauss and Mozart in period costume. That can be a pleasant evening, but it is not the Philharmonic — check who is actually performing on the Musikverein's own calendar and buy there. Guided tours of the Golden Hall run on many days — not on Sundays or holidays, and only when rehearsals allow. More in concerts in Vienna.
