Upper Belvedere

4.7(90,583)out of 5 on GoogleOpen · until 18:00📍 Landstraße · 3rd district

The grander of Prince Eugene of Savoy's two Baroque palaces, and the museum that holds Klimt's The Kiss.

Eugene, the general who had helped push the Ottomans back from Vienna and across the Balkans, commissioned Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt to build a summer residence on the slope above the city. The Upper Belvedere, completed in 1723, was the showpiece for receptions, and its view down the terraced garden to the Old Town is the reason for the name. On 15 May 1955 the Austrian State Treaty, which restored the country's full independence, was signed in its Marble Hall and shown to the crowd from the balcony.

Today it houses the Belvedere's collection of Austrian art from the Middle Ages to the present, with the world's largest group of paintings by Gustav Klimt — The Kiss (1908–09) and Judith among them — alongside Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and the Biedermeier painters. Checked on belvedere.at in September 2026: Upper Belvedere €23, or €32 for a day ticket combined with the Lower Belvedere; open daily 09:00–18:00.

The Kiss room is permanently crowded, so go straight there at opening or in the last hour, then see the rest at leisure. The garden between the two palaces is free and worth the walk down. Under-19s enter free. Wider context: Vienna's palaces and Landstraße.
