Schönbrunn Palace

4.7(185,454)out of 5 on GoogleOpen · until 17:30📍 Hietzing · 13th district

The Habsburgs' summer palace, with 1,441 rooms, and together with its gardens a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

Leopold I commissioned Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach to build a hunting residence here from 1696; Maria Theresa turned it into the imperial family's summer seat, with Nikolaus Pacassi remodelling it from the 1740s. The six-year-old Mozart played for her in the Hall of Mirrors in 1762. Franz Joseph was born in the palace in 1830 and died in it in 1916, and in November 1918 his successor Karl I signed away his role in government here, ending six centuries of Habsburg rule.

Tickets changed in 2026: the old Imperial and Grand Tours are gone. Checked on schoenbrunn.at in September 2026, the Palace Ticket — every room on the main floor, including the apartments of Franz Joseph and Sisi and Maria Theresa's chambers, with audioguide, about 75 minutes — costs €42, and the shorter State Apartments ticket €30. Entry is by fixed time slot and genuine online tickets are sold only through the official shop — buy there rather than from resellers.

Book the first slot of the day and you will walk the rooms before the coach groups. Afterwards, the park is free — climb to the Gloriette for the classic view. Full ticket breakdown: Schönbrunn Palace tickets; context in Vienna's palaces.
