Kahlenberg viewpoint

The hill at the north-western edge of Vienna where the Vienna Woods meet the Danube, with the classic panorama over the whole city.

Its place in European history was sealed on 12 September 1683, when the relief army under the Polish king Jan III Sobieski gathered on these heights and descended on the Ottoman forces besieging Vienna, ending the second siege of the city. The small Baroque church of St. Joseph on the summit, cared for by Polish priests, keeps a chapel in Sobieski's memory. In the nineteenth century a cog railway carried day-trippers up; it was dismantled after the First World War, and the Höhenstrasse, the scenic road through the woods, came in the 1930s.

The terrace beside the church looks out over the vineyards of Döbling and Nussdorf, the Danube and its islands, and the city with St. Stephen's spire and, on clear days, far across the Vienna basin. It is free and open all the time. Getting there, bus 38A from the U4 terminus at Heiligenstadt runs up to the summit.

The best way down is on foot: marked paths lead through the vineyards to the Heurigen of Nussdorf and Grinzing in about an hour, which turns a view into an afternoon.
