Hernals

17th district · right bank of the Danube

Hernals

A quiet residential district running from the Gürtel to the woods at Neuwaldegg, with little for visitors beyond walks.

What it is

The 17th district is a long, narrow strip reaching from the dense streets by the Gürtel out to the former village of Neuwaldegg on the edge of the Vienna Woods. It is lived in, not visited.

What is here

Hernalser Hauptstraße, a plain local shopping street, and the calm squares around the old parish church. At the far end, the Schwarzenbergpark and forest paths into the Vienna Woods, reached by tram 43. Honestly, visitors get little here unless they want a walk in the woods or have a reason to be nearby.

Frequently asked

Which district of Vienna is Hernals in?

Hernals is Vienna's 17th district, on the right bank of the Danube, the same side as the historic centre. It is easy to verify from the postcode: the four digits start with 1, the middle two give the district and the last is 0, so any street address here carries 1170. That is the quickest way to find out where a listing actually is before you book it.

Where should I eat in Hernals?

Among the best-rated restaurants in the district are Johan‘s Küche, Pizzeria 450 Gradi and Marien Beisl. The ratings come from Google and are refreshed periodically — they are not paid placements.

Is Hernals a good area to stay in?

It depends what you want from it. The accommodation section above lists a few options in the district, and the write-up at the top of this page says plainly who the area suits and who it does not. The map at the foot of the page is centred on Hernals itself.

Is there a proper Viennese coffee house in Hernals?

Yes — Café IIN and Anns Café. A Viennese coffee house is judged on simple things: the glass of water that arrives with the coffee, the newspapers on wooden holders, and nobody hurrying you out after a single Melange.

Does Hernals have any nightlife?

Yes. Reference points in the district include The Green Room Irish Bar, Jetzt Bar+Entertainment and Padrino Caffe. For the densest concentration of bars, Viennese nights move to the arches under the U6 along the Gürtel and the streets around Schwedenplatz.

Districts next door

Vienna's districts run into one another without a seam, and the U-Bahn makes most of them closer than they look — these are the nearest, measured from the centre of this one.
