18th district · right bank of the Danube
Währing
A leafy, prosperous villa district with the Cottage quarter and the Türkenschanzpark — pleasant, quiet and short on sights.
What it is
The 18th district climbs from the Gürtel through Gersthof and Pötzleinsdorf towards the Vienna Woods. Its Cottage quarter, laid out from the 1870s as English-style villas with gardens, is still one of Vienna's most desirable addresses.
What is here
The Türkenschanzpark, a landscaped park with ponds and a lookout tower. Schubertpark, the former local cemetery where Beethoven and Schubert were first buried. Villa streets for a quiet walk. Pleasant for a long stay in an apartment; day visitors have little reason to come.

Frequently asked
Which district of Vienna is Währing in?
Währing is Vienna's 18th district, on the right bank of the Danube, the same side as the historic centre. It is easy to verify from the postcode: the four digits start with 1, the middle two give the district and the last is 0, so any street address here carries 1180. That is the quickest way to find out where a listing actually is before you book it.
What is worth seeing in Währing?
The best-known sights here are Türkenschanzpark, Aussichtsturm Paulinenwarte im Türkenschanzpark and Währinger Schubertpark. The full list, with opening hours and a map, is further up this page.
Where should I eat in Währing?
Among the best-rated restaurants in the district are Café Trabant, Restaurant Orientable and DAST Restaurant. The ratings come from Google and are refreshed periodically — they are not paid placements.
Is Währing a good area to stay in?
It depends what you want from it. The accommodation section above lists a few options in the district, and the write-up at the top of this page says plainly who the area suits and who it does not. The map at the foot of the page is centred on Währing itself.
Is there a proper Viennese coffee house in Währing?
Yes — Il Piccolo CAFFÈ*BAR and MANANA cafẽ. A Viennese coffee house is judged on simple things: the glass of water that arrives with the coffee, the newspapers on wooden holders, and nobody hurrying you out after a single Melange.
Does Währing have any nightlife?
Yes. Reference points in the district include D.E.R. location and Irish Pub Na Nog. For the densest concentration of bars, Viennese nights move to the arches under the U6 along the Gürtel and the streets around Schwedenplatz.

Vienna's districts run into one another without a seam, and the U-Bahn makes most of them closer than they look — these are the nearest, measured from the centre of this one.
