October begins mild — highs around 14°C on average — and ends properly autumnal. The first half is the time for the vineyards: the leaves turn on the Kahlenberg and the Nussberg, Sturm is still being poured, and a walk from Nussdorf up through the vines to a Heuriger is the best afternoon the city offers all year.
The cultural calendar is dense. The ORF Long Night of Museums opens museums across the city until midnight on one ticket (Saturday 3 October 2026), and the Viennale, Austria's major film festival, takes over the cinemas in the second half of the month (22 October – 3 November 2026). The opera and concert seasons are in full swing.
26 October is Austria's National Day, a public holiday. Prices remain high through the month, softening in the last week.
