If you can choose one month, choose September. Average highs are still around 21°C, the heat of August has gone, and the city is back at work: the Staatsoper and the concert halls open their new seasons, and the coffee houses are full again.

It is also the start of wine season. Sturm — the cloudy, lightly fermented young wine — appears at the Heurigen as the harvest begins, and the Wiener Weinwandertag turns the vineyard paths of Neustift, Sievering, Nussdorf, Stammersdorf and Mauer into one long free walk between taverns. In 2026 it falls on 26–27 September.

The catch is that everyone else knows it, too, and September is a big congress month. Hotel prices are among the highest of the year; book early and expect full palaces.
