August is July with fewer Viennese. Many locals are away, some restaurants close for a holiday week or two, and business travel stops, which softens hotel rates at the upper end. Visitors still come in numbers, so the palaces and the old town stay busy.

The heat is the same — average highs around 26°C, and heatwaves are no longer rare. Plan around it: early mornings at Schönbrunn or the Belvedere, the midday hours in the cool of a museum, and the late afternoon on the water at the Alte Donau or the Danube Island. The Film Festival on Rathausplatz continues every evening.

The opera and the Musikverein are still dark, so for music look to the open-air programmes and the summer concerts aimed at visitors. The season restarts in September.
