July is Vienna's hottest month on average, with highs of around 26°C — and recent summers have regularly run well above that. The inner city stores the heat, the palace interiors are not air-conditioned, and the queue at Schönbrunn at eleven is the least pleasant hour of the year.

So do what the Viennese do. See the museums in the morning, spend the afternoon at the Alte Donau or on the Danube Island, where the city swims, and go out when it cools. The Film Festival on Rathausplatz screens free music films every evening through July and August, with food stands in front of City Hall, and the Heurigen gardens are at their best after dark.

One thing to know: the big opera and concert houses go on their summer break, so this is not the month for a Staatsoper evening. Check the calendars before building a trip around music.
