November is the darkest month for sunshine after December — barely two hours a day on average, with highs around 9°C. It is not a month for views. It is a month for Vienna's interiors, and the city is very good at those.
The season arrives earlier here than in most of Europe. The ball season officially opens on 11 November at 11:11 with a public waltz on the Graben, the same day the new wine stops being "heuriger" and becomes last year's. The first Christmas markets open on 6 November 2026 at Schönbrunn and Stephansplatz, the Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt on 13 November, and by the last week of the month all the major markets are running.
That makes the second half of November the smart time for the markets: lights, Punsch and stalls, with fewer crowds and lower hotel prices than in December.
