Café Prückel

4.0(5,312)out of 5 on Google€€€€Open · until 22:00📍 Innere Stadt · 1st district

The Ringstrasse café with the 1950s interior, on the corner opposite the Stadtpark and next to the MAK, the Museum of Applied Arts.

It opened in 1903, in the years when the Ring was lined with grand cafés. What sets it apart today is that its main room was remodelled in the mid-1950s in the style of the time, and that look has been kept with care: pastel colours, globe lamps, slim-legged chairs and upholstered banquettes under a high ceiling. The effect is less imperial than the Sacher or the Landtmann, and to many Viennese more relaxed — a place of students, retired professors, card players and people reading the papers for an hour or two.

It serves the full coffee-house repertoire — Melange, Einspänner, strudel, Topfenstrudel, Viennese breakfasts and simple hot dishes — at prices that feel fair for the location. As published on prueckel.at in September 2026, it is open daily 08:30–22:00.

Honest note: service can be brisk, and the tables by the windows go first. It is the ideal pause after the MAK or a walk through the Stadtpark, and a short walk from the Wien Mitte and Stubentor stations. Etiquette: Viennese coffee-house etiquette; more in Vienna's coffee houses; neighbourhood: the Innere Stadt.

Where is Café Prückel?

The address is Stubenring 24, 1010 Wien, in Innere Stadt (Vienna's 1st district).

How old is Café Prückel?

It has been running since 1903, which places it among Vienna's genuinely long-established coffee houses.

What should I order at Café Prückel, and how long can I stay?

The classic order is a Melange — espresso with steamed milk and foam, Vienna's cousin of the cappuccino — which arrives with a glass of water, often refilled without asking. In a traditional Viennese coffee house nobody hurries you: one coffee buys you hours and the house newspapers. When you want the bill, say "Zahlen, bitte" and pay at the table.

Is Café Prückel worth visiting?

It holds 4.0 out of 5 from 5,312 Google reviews — a strong score for a coffee house in Vienna. Treat the rating as a starting point, not a verdict, and read a few recent reviews too.
