Café Landtmann
The grand café of the Ringstrasse's political and theatrical quarter, facing the Burgtheater and a few steps from the University, City Hall and Parliament.
Franz Landtmann opened it in 1873, the year of Vienna's World Exhibition, and it quickly became a meeting place for actors, professors and politicians. Sigmund Freud was among the regulars. It has stayed in that role: journalists still wait here for politicians, and press conferences and interviews happen at the tables in the wood-panelled rooms. Since 1976 it has been run by the Querfeld family, who also own several other traditional cafés.
The Landtmann is more polished than bohemian — waiters in black, a long pastry display from its own bakery, and a large covered terrace on the Ring, one of the best people-watching spots in the city. It serves full meals as well as coffee and cake. As published on landtmann.at in September 2026, it opens Monday to Saturday 07:30–24:00 and Sunday 07:30–22:00.
Honest note: it is more expensive than the neighbourhood cafés, and the terrace fills with visitors at lunchtime. The best moments are breakfast, when the regulars are reading the papers, or a late supper after a performance at the Burgtheater opposite. Etiquette: Viennese coffee-house etiquette; more in Vienna's coffee houses.

Where is Café Landtmann?
The address is Universitätsring 4, 1010 Wien, in Innere Stadt (Vienna's 1st district).
How old is Café Landtmann?
It has been running since 1873, which places it among Vienna's genuinely long-established coffee houses.
What should I order at Café Landtmann, and how long can I stay?
The classic order is a Melange — espresso with steamed milk and foam, Vienna's cousin of the cappuccino — which arrives with a glass of water, often refilled without asking. In a traditional Viennese coffee house nobody hurries you: one coffee buys you hours and the house newspapers. When you want the bill, say "Zahlen, bitte" and pay at the table.
