Lower Belvedere
Prince Eugene of Savoy's actual summer residence, at the foot of the Belvedere garden, now used for the Belvedere's major temporary exhibitions.
Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt built it between 1712 and 1716, a few years before the grander Upper Belvedere at the top of the slope. Where the upper palace was made for receptions, this was where Eugene lived, and its state rooms are more intimate and more lavish: the Marble Hall with its ceiling fresco glorifying the prince, the Grotesque Hall, the Marble Gallery and the Golden Cabinet, a small room lined almost entirely in gilded carving and mirrors. The Orangery and the former palace stables sit alongside.
Checked on belvedere.at in September 2026: Lower Belvedere €17, or €32 for a day ticket that includes the Upper Belvedere; open daily 10:00–18:00. What you see beyond the Baroque rooms depends on the exhibition of the moment, so check the programme before you go — some shows are excellent, and some visitors are disappointed to find no Klimt here.
If your time is short, do the Upper Belvedere for the collection. If you have more, enter here from Rennweg, see the state rooms and the exhibition, then walk up through the free garden to the upper palace — the view improves with every terrace. Plan with Vienna's palaces.
