April is when Vienna's parks come back. The Volksgarten roses are still weeks away, but the Prater's chestnut avenues, the Burggarten and the Schönbrunn gardens turn green, and the average high climbs to around 17°C with more than seven hours of sunshine a day.
It is also the month the wine taverns wake up. Heurigen open on rotating dates — look for the pine branch over the gate and the word "Ausg'steckt" — and on a warm afternoon the tables in Grinzing, Nussdorf or Stammersdorf fill with Viennese rather than visitors. Check the calendar before you ride out.
The Vienna City Marathon takes over the Ring on Sunday 18 April 2027, closing streets across the centre for most of the day. Weather can still turn: bring a layer for the evenings.
