Tipping and the bill
Five to ten percent, depending on how good it was — and you say the total out loud when you pay rather than leaving coins behind.
How much
The Vienna Tourist Board's guidance is 5–10% in restaurants, cafés and taxis and at the hairdresser, depending on how satisfied you are. Nobody expects American percentages, and nobody expects nothing.
How it is done
The Viennese way is to round up or state the total as you pay. The waiter brings the bill to the table; if it says €46.50, you hand over the card or the cash and say "fifty" — that is the amount charged, tip included. Leaving coins on the table after paying is not wrong, just less usual.
When not to
If a service charge is already included on the bill, do not tip twice. Check before you add anything.
In a coffee house
The same rules apply to a Melange as to a dinner. The waiter — the *Herr Ober* of legend — handles the bill at your table; pay him, not at a counter.
