🚑 Essentials
Emergencies, doctors and health
112 works for everything. 144 is the ambulance, 133 the police, 141 the out-of-hours doctor — all free to call.
The numbers
All free, from any phone:
- 112 — European emergency number, any emergency
- 144 — ambulance
- 133 — police
- 122 — fire brigade
- 141 — doctor on call, out of hours
- 1450 — health hotline, for advice on where to go
- 01 406 43 43 — poison information centre
Health cover
Visitors from the EU should bring the European Health Insurance Card, which covers necessary treatment in the public system on the same terms as locals. It is not travel insurance: it does not cover repatriation or private clinics, so travel insurance is still worth having. Visitors from outside the EU need their own insurance.
Water
Vienna's tap water is drinkable — it arrives from Alpine springs — so there is no need to buy bottled water.
If you lose your passport
Report it to the police, then contact your consulate. For Romanian citizens, the consular section's address and emergency line are on Vienna from Romania.
