Schönbrunn Zoo
Tiergarten Schönbrunn, the oldest zoo in the world still operating, set inside the palace park.
Francis Stephen of Lorraine, Maria Theresa's husband, founded it in 1752 as an imperial menagerie. Its heart is still the octagonal Baroque pavilion of 1759, where the court took breakfast while watching the animals; the enclosures radiate from it like slices of a cake. Over the twentieth and twenty-first centuries the zoo has been steadily rebuilt around larger, more natural habitats, and today it mixes listed historic buildings with modern houses for rainforest, polar and aquarium animals.
Checked on zoovienna.at in September 2026: adults €29, ages 6 to 19 €17, under-6s free. It opens daily at 09:00 and closes between 16:30 in winter and 18:30 from April to September, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. The Classic Pass Plus from Schönbrunn bundles the zoo with the palace if you plan to do both.
Honest advice: this is a half day, not a quick add-on to the palace — the grounds climb up the hill towards the Tyrolean Garden and there is a lot of walking. Weekday mornings are calmest; summer weekends and school holidays are crowded. Go early for the most active animals and eat outside the pavilion rush at noon. Plan it with Vienna's palaces and Hietzing.
