Leopold Museum
The museum of Vienna 1900, and home to the world's largest collection of works by Egon Schiele.
It grew out of the private collection of Rudolf and Elisabeth Leopold, an ophthalmologist and his wife who began buying Schiele in the 1950s, when he was still undervalued, and went on to assemble thousands of works of Austrian art. In 1994 the collection passed to a private foundation set up with the Austrian state, and the museum opened in 2001 in the white limestone cube at the centre of the MuseumsQuartier. The collection has not been without controversy: Schiele's Portrait of Wally was held in New York for more than a decade over a looted-art claim, until a settlement in 2010.
Beyond Schiele — self-portraits, landscapes, the unflinching figure drawings — the museum shows Klimt, including Death and Life, Richard Gerstl, Oskar Kokoschka, and furniture and objects of the Wiener Werkstätte by Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser. Checked on leopoldmuseum.org in September 2026: €19, reduced €16, under-19s €2.50; open 10:00–18:00, closed on Tuesdays — the detail that catches most visitors out.
If you only have time for one Vienna 1900 museum, choose between this and the Upper Belvedere: the Belvedere for Klimt's Kiss, the Leopold for Schiele in depth. The café on the ground floor opens onto the MQ courtyard. Neighbourhood: Neubau.
